A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) assesses an individual’s ability to perform the physical tasks required by their role and work environment. More recently FCEs may include cognitive components.

Functional Capacity Evaluation

The assessment can occur either in a clinic situation or at a workplace and will vary depending on the job role demands. Commonly included components include:

Material handling – such as lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling
Positional tolerance and endurance
Object manipulation and hand dexterity
Range of motion
Physical strength
Cardiovascular fitness

An FCE report contains an assessment about an individual’s capacity to work and, where relevant includes details on their performance of individual components with clear recommendations.
